Re: Alternatives to incandescents for current limiters?

Try a variac with ammeter instead of the lightbulb limiter. Easy to control voltage and can monitor current draw in real-time. Plus you don't run into the issue of forgetting that you're running through the limiter and wondering why your voltages are off :) It does happen...

Re: Tube gear safety precautions

Hi John: After you drain the caps measure them with a DMM before you touch anything to make sure they are in fact drained. Only put one hand in the amp - never both. A common caution is to put the other behind your back, in your pocket, etc., but in real life that doesn't always happen. Just keep yo...

Oscilloscope Max Input Voltage Question

Hello. I’m considering getting a DSO to use instead of my Leader analog oscilloscope and have a question on Max Input Voltage. For background I fix guitar amps for a hobby and only use the oscilloscope in AC Coupling with 600v probes set to 10x. My Leader analog oscilloscope is rated for 600V DC + A...

Re: Tektronix TDS 360 Dallas Battery Replacement

Hi Dan: It's interesting that you posted this alternative. I was doing some more reading over the weekend and came across someone that did this exact procedure with the Dallas chip on their oscilloscope. They used a dremel to grind the casing and expose the internal battery. Then they broke the posi...

Tektronix TDS 360 Dallas Battery Replacement

I picked up this Tektronix oscilloscope for free from a guy that was moving and wanted to get rid of it. Currently it works great, passes self test, etc., but I know it has limited life remaining because Dallas battery chip is old. Has anybody replaced one of these Dallas chips and if so, where did ...

Re: Using a DC Bench Power Supply to Test Amplifiers

Thanks for the info. However, I'm trying to get an idea if this something I'm eventually going to need first. Seeing the one online made me question if I need one on my bench. Thanks

Using a DC Bench Power Supply to Test Amplifiers

I'm about year into repairing guitar amps as a hobby and to date haven't had the need for a DC power supply. Yet, when watching YouTube videos, for example, pretty much everyone has a DC power supply on their bench but I haven't seen much use of them. Is this something I'll eventually need for amp r...

Re: Is a dedicated function generator necessary anymore?

I use the Tenma 72-505 signal generator. It's handheld, runs on a 9v battery and costs around $50-$60. When I was looking to get one I initially thought about using an app on my iPhone, but several people on another forum that I'm on recommended against that as there's the potential of damaging the ...

Re: Rigol DS1054Z - Thoughts?

Thanks Tom. I should have mentioned that there's one for sale by me for $250 that the seller said was seldom used. It looks new and incudes all the probes, etc. I cleaned the pots on my Leader and it's working good again. Still thinking about picking this one up though.

Rigol DS1054Z - Thoughts?

Hello Everyone: I only work on guitars amps (both tube and SS) and currently have a Leader LBO-508, which I really like and is perfect for my needs. However, the pots are starting to get touchy and scratchy again and I've already cleaned them twice in the past year (Deoxit). I don't use it every day...
