I finally found out what it is. It is called a "Mallory Bias Cell".
Once you know what to call it, you can find all sorts of information about it!

Guys I need help. I am working on a Grunow model 596 AM radio cira 1939. It has a transformer so it is pre AA5. Anyway, it has a component in it that I don't know (for sure) what it is.
