Preamp vs Power amp gain
Hi, This may be a stupid question, but here goes. I have a computer outputing USB to a Modi 2 DAC, connected to an Elekit TU-8200R amp running KT88 tubes. So my computer has a volume knob and so does the tube amp. Is there a magic combination of gain settings for best sound, or is it a case of exper...

Re: Harmonica Amp
Hi GusGus, Excellent work! Your tolex work is impressive! What sort of adhesive did you use? As for shielding, screen, perforated metal, copper foil, aluminum foil, sheet metal, and shielding paint all work. However, if you're not getting bothersome noise pickup or hum, they may not be necessary. W...

Re: Harmonica Amp
Wow! I've never seen a heavy-duty wire-wound potentiometer used in a guitar effects pedal! But if you had it lying around and the value is right, why not? It's a rotary L-Pad controller. The design page is here with the explanation of how it works https://guitar.com/guides/diy-workshop/diy-workshop...

Re: Sensitive speakers
If you can build a simple box and enjoy that kind of thing, you might look at some of the kits from DIY Sound Group. They have numerous designs in the 91-99db sensitivity range. Many come with pre-routed baffles. The specs look to be real measured numbers - not Marketing Department exaggerations. S...

Here is the back finished https://i.ibb.co/LSZ0V60/IMG-20210226-082353.jpg I also built an attenuator from plans I found on the net. It gives a great overdriven Chicago blues sound without rattling the windows and making the dogs howl. https://i.ibb.co/ch7cyLW/IMG-20200424-115137.jpg https://i.ibb.c...

Re: Harmonica Amp
Nice! Love the look of that alligator-pattern covering. Did you bend the chassis yourself? Looks like a single sheet of aluminum (or what you might call aluminium, I think). Just curious - Will the back cover include metallic shielding (such as metal window screen, adhesive copper foil or aluminum ...

Re: Harmonica Amp
pretty cool. homegrown or commercial? I started with a really cheap old Marshal amp case that belonged to one of my kids from years ago. I stripped it, then made up an aluminium chassis to fit. I got the Kalamazoo schematic from the web and then designed and built it from parts. It uses a 6X4, a 12...

Re: Sensitive speakers
Of the Altec speakers you could POSSIBLY encounter in the wild the 604C will be the most " common"....but be aware the crossover network is almost impossible to recap ( N1600} ,a quick ohm meter test will let you know if the HF and LF drivers are good ....the 601 has blown tweeters a lot ...

Re: Sensitive speakers
Hi,
Floor Standers are out of the question for this application. Monitor types from Klipsch are around 93db, rather than 97 for the floor standers. How much of a difference will this make in the real world?
I'm not looking to spend more than £700
